- I don't want to start a big discussion here about Jack. But what
- exectly did he do to Commodore? As far as I know it was a one
- billion dollar company when he left. Great products like the CBM
- 9000 were in the works which got canned later. He also built up
- Atari again and kept pushing the industry forward at least until
- 1990. I remember when German business magazines were just
- astonished by the 520ST which was 1/3 of the price of a Mac and
- 1/4 of the price of an IBM AT. I have never seen people as amazed
- at a CeBIT as they were when Atari showed the 520ST in 85. They
- were standing there with their mouths wide open. Yes, many things
- should have been done differently. But the whole industry changed.
- There is no more (orginal) Commodore, no more Sinclair, Oric,
- Tandy, Dragon, Amstrad etc. And even Apple seems to have problems
- competing against Wintel. The good old days are over. I know many
- people don't agree with his business style and it's definetly
- unique. So far he has survived. I can say that I enjoyed many of
- Tramiel's products: the VIC-20, C-64, the 520ST, Mega ST, TT, Lynx
- and Jaguar. Those were good products at a great price.
